The darkstars bandwidth tragedy

Post by AF » Thu Dec 20, 2007 9:54 am

It seems that I, you, blackliger, his friends, my friends, several svn repos, etc have all collectively used 5.5GB worth of bandwidth since december began.

Of this 5GB was taken up by the ta3d.darkstars.co.uk domain <_<.

Now if you look at our plan we still have 5560GB of unused bandwidth left before jan 5th when we get a whole lot of new bandwidth.

What's more the bandwidth we get increases every week by 40GB. So by january we'll have been given 80GB of free bandwidth out of loyalty despite only using ~6-7GB of our 5.6TB bandwidth.

Hopefully one day, we will break the 1% usage barrier, only it seems the barrier is moving faster than we can handle...

Yeah, this looks like some kind of missmatch, 5 GB is a way too much, that could be used. More detailed statistic plz :D

You can get a huge long list of statistics with charts if you append stats/ to the url.

Granted I need to set up a username and pass for access to it. Really you should have a download counter for releases.

Figures in parentheses refer to the 7-day period ending Dec 20 2007 at 3:28 AM.

Successful requests: 147,016 (48,216)
Average successful requests per day: 7,741 (6,887)
Successful requests for pages: 64,010 (20,461)
Average successful requests for pages per day: 3,370 (2,922)
Failed requests: 15,195 (564)
Redirected requests: 56 (10)
Distinct files requested: 32,224 (2,074)
Distinct hosts served: 3,532 (328)
Data transferred: 5.86 gigabytes (1.82 gigabytes)
Average data transferred per day: 316.20 megabytes (265.74 megabytes)
Apparently there are thousands of failed requests for fond.gif, and linuxgames and my aflobby thread on the glest forums make up almost half of all refering sites.

We also have ~400 users running Windows ME, windows 3.1 and windows CE.

At least half of the user base who visited was using either mozilla or firefox.

41% of traffic was AVI files
15% 7zip
15% exe
13% jpeg
11% php

13302 failed requests for /fond.gif

failed requests for fond.gif comes from browsers cache being updated, because fond.gif no longer exists, it has been replaced with a jpg version :).

The 11% php is huge compared to 15% 7zip & 15% exe !!

NB: there are sites that still refer to ta3d.sourceforge.net which is redirected to ta3d.darkstars.co.uk (using the same URL after server name, so people don't even see the server changed when loading a page).

A download counter could be useful, we'll have to add one.
