Voxel thread

Post by Balthazar » Tue Feb 23, 2010 10:17 am

I`ve bump in the voxel topic somewhere. Here`s a few exmplex of voxel renderers, pretty impressive, isn`t it?

I doubt that it can be used in TA3D, but maybe it`ll be usefull for something else :)

That's interesting :). Ray tracing is the future 8)

Ray tracing is a rendering technique whereas voxels are a way of representing things in a 3D space. Now you can combine both and even generate/extrapolate between voxels on the fly to get infinitely smooth surfaces :).

Also ray tracing can reproduce all physical light effects without cheating like reflection, diffraction, indirect lighting (also know as radiosity), shadows, etc...

Of course I did, computer graphics is what I am studying (among other things) so I am interested in everything related to it

Ain't Voxel's some old Rendering Technology used by some old Games like Tiberian Sun?

also To be honest the first video with a Skull it looks like several flat pictures maked in a clump o_O

Voxels are not old-fashioned because when you want to capture a real object the only thing you get from your scanner is a huge bunch of voxels. Also having a very high density of voxels gives very impressive results.

Voxels are not used any more in games mainly because the only representation which can be used by hardware for high speed rendering is a triangle mesh but they are still used by various algorithms which work on 3D data.

The first video seems its textures is a bit poor i mean it looks so unclear and blurry..

and some black boxes

is it because it would increase the footprint size way too much?
