Email activation may not be enough, something extra may be needed on the registration page such as a box with a basic math calc next to it or a checkbox saying 'I am not a bot', or even 3 images pick the odd one out.

Recaptcha should be a good plugin for this. It scans in books and any text it can't read it puts in a database to be used as a captcha, then it distorts them a little and presents the user with two words, one known and one unknown. If the user typed the unknown one correctly it's assumed the other one was correct and its flagged and sent to others for verification.
So by definition it's unreadable otherwise the word wouldnt make it to the recaptcha system. That and if the system is broken then the recaptcha people only have to change things on their end and everyone using recaptcha is updated silently.
btw the shell account for this host uses the same user and pass as the ftp, just connect to darkstars.co.uk or ta3d.darkstars.co.uk using putty or w/e linux might use instead.
